On 4th April, the traditional Chinese Qingming Festival for people to tend the graves and remember the departed ones, a wreath-laying ceremony was held by the Chinese Embassy at a cemetery of Santa Luċija to commemorate the two Chinese engineers who devoted their lives during the construction of the No. 6 Dry Dock of Malta in 1979.
"The No. 6 Dry Dock is the monument of Sino-Malta friendship. Mr. Xu Huizhong and Mr. Gu Yanzhao will be always remembered as the envoys of friendship by the people of China and Malta", said Chinese Ambassador Cai Jinbiao during the ceremony. In 1970s, China and Malta reached an agreement for the latter to use China's interest-free loan for the construction of the No.6 Dry Dock. The project was China's second largest foreign aid at the time. The Chinese companies completed the project in 5 years and 9 months. Mr. Xu and Mr. Gu lost their young lives during the construction in 1979, Mr. Xu in an accident and Mr. Gu because of fatal illness. Mr. Gu was the Deputy COO of the project at the time. The deceased engineers' families chose to let their loved ones rest in peace in Malta to witness the completion of the project they once worked for and receive the respect of the local people. The dock has been playing a crucial role in Malta's ship maintenance industry as well as the country's economy as a whole for which the two Chinese engineers could rest in peace.
The Chinese Embassy and the Santa Luċija Local Council hold commemorative activities in honour of the two engineers every year.
