Vice Foreign Minister Qiao Zonghuai Meets with Director General of Foreign Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

2005/12/26

On December 26 2005, Qiao Zonghuai, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China met with Kono Masaharu, Director General of Foreign Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan at the invitation of the latter. Both sides exchanged views on issues of common concern.

Talking of the reform of the United Nations (UN), Qiao introduced the views of China. He stressed that the current pressing task is to implement the Outcome Document reached at the Summit marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, push for progress in areas where more consensus was reached regarding the UN reform, and give top priority to the development issue. The reform of the UN Security Council should first consider increasing the representation of developing countries, especially African countries. On the issue of the UN reform, broad consensus should be reached on the basis of full discussion and democratic consultations. The Chinese side opposes the forced voting on any resolution over which major differences still exist.
