Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo Meets with Ambassadors of Some EU Countries to China

2008/02/04

On February 4, 2008, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo met in the Chinese Foreign Ministry with Poland's Ambassador Krzysztof Szumski, Greek Ambassador Michael Cambanis and Belgium's Ambassador Bernard Pierre to China respectively.

Wu exchanged views with the three ambassadors on bilateral ties respectively. While briefing on the latest developments of the situation across the Taiwan Straits, Wu pointed out that the Taiwan authorities' proposed "referendum on U.N. membership" is a dangerous move towards "de jure Taiwan independence" and will seriously damage peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and in the Asia-Pacific region. Wu appreciated the governments of these three countries for always adhering to the one-China policy, expressing hope that they will remain highly vigilant against any dangerous moves of the "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces and express public and clear opposition to "Taiwan independence" and "referendum on U.N. membership" as soon as possible. The three ambassadors reaffirmed adherence to the one-China policy and support of China's reunification.

Wu also gave a detailed introduction to the recent snow havoc in southern parts of China and the joint efforts by the Chinese government and people to tide over the disaster. The three ambassadors expressed sympathy and solicitude to the Chinese side on behalf of their respective governments, which Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo appreciated.
