Solana Delivers Fresh Six-nation Plan to Iran with Representatives of Five Countries

On June 14, 2008, High Representative for the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, together with the political director-generals from the Foreign Ministries of China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany, delivered a letter from foreign ministers of the six countries to Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and a proposal on restarting the six-nation talks to Secretary of the Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili respectively.

Solana briefed on the letter by the foreign ministers of the six countries to their Iranian counterpart and the proposal on resuming talks, emphasizing that the six countries and the EU are committed to resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through negotiations. Solana affirmed the constructive content in Iran's package of proposals and hoped to restart dialogue and talks at the earliest date possible. The Iranian side pledged to seriously study the letter from foreign ministers of the six countries and the proposal on resuming the talks, adding that Iran is ready to conduct dialogue with the six countries.

Liu emphasized that it is in the interest of all parties to address the Iranian nuclear issue through negotiations. China has always been committed to promoting peace talks and has made unremitting efforts to this end. The letter from the six foreign ministers and the proposal on restarting the talks will provide an important opportunity for properly handling the nuclear issue and conducting cooperation in all areas. China welcomes the package of proposals raised by Iran, which indicate that Iran is ready to resolve the issue through negotiations. China hopes that relevant parties can seize the opportunity to enhance diplomatic efforts and restart dialogue and talks as soon as possible so as to achieve a comprehensive, long-term solution. China will continue to work with relevant parties to play a constructive role in this regard.
