On December 2, 2009, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao, who was visiting Ethiopia, visited the China-aided AU Conference Center project site, called on the Chinese project team staff and inspected the project construction. Gu Xiaojie, Ambassador of China to Ethiopia and Representative to AU, accompanied Song during the activity.
Song Tao listened to the report made by the Chinese project leader on the latest progress of the project. He said that the AU Conference Center project is one of the eight policy measures announced by President Hu Jintao at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and is China's largest assistance project in Africa after the Tanzania-Zambia railway. It is therefore of great political significance. Song hoped that the Chinese companies have a high degree of political responsibility and mission and work closely with the African Union side to ensure the timely delivery of the project with both quality and quantity guaranteed. The Chinese government and embassy in Egypt will spare no effort to resolve difficulties for enterprises and protect employee benefits for the smooth delivery of the project. The leader of the Chinese project team expressed sincere thanks to Song Tao for his visit and care, saying that all the Chinese employees are encouraged and they will bear in mind the government's instructions and repay the motherland’s trust with excellent performance.
