Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping Accepts a Joint Interview with the Chinese and Russian Media Concerning the 10th Anniversary of the Signing of the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between China and Russia
On the eve of the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between China and Russia, Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping accepted a joint interview with the Chinese and Russian media to introduce the significant implications of the treaty and the development of bilateral relations on July 14, 2011.
Cheng briefly reviewed the background of the treaty. He spoke highly of the significant instrumental role of the treaty in ensuring the continuous, healthy and stable development of Sino-Russian relations. He pointed out that the treaty has established the peaceful concept of generational friendship between China and Russia in a legal form, has determined the strategic partnership of coordination based upon equality and mutual trust as the relationship model for China and Russia, and has identified the guideline of firmly supporting each other and making unremitting efforts to expand pragmatic cooperation in all areas. The treaty has laid a solid political and legal basis for the development of bilateral relations in the new century and has become a framework document guiding the long-term development of bilateral relations.
Cheng said that the 10 years since the treaty was signed is a decade when the Sino-Russian relations achieved great development and breakthroughs. The Sino-Russian relations have witnessed a series of remarkable achievements, have brought tangible benefits to the two peoples, and have made important contributions to consolidating regional and global peace, security and stability. President Hu paid a successful state visit to Russia recently. The two heads of state had a comprehensive summary of the experiences and results of the development of bilateral relations over the past 10 years, determined the direction for bilateral ties in the next 10 years, planned and established goals for bilateral cooperation in various fields. This has injected new impetus to the development of Sino-Russian strategic partnership of coordination. He expressed the belief that the treaty will shine for the next 10 years or even more distant future and will constantly lift the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia to new levels and new achievements so as to benefit both countries and peoples.
Cheng also answered questions concerning Sino-Russian energy cooperation, cultural and people-to-people exchanges and other issues.
