In 2010, the relations between the People's Republic of China and the Kingdom of Tonga enjoyed sound development.
The two countries maintained high-level exchanges. In April, Special Envoy for China-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue Du Qiwen visited Tonga. In August, Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai met Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defense Dr. Feleti Vaka'uta Sevele during the 22nd Post-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue in Vanuatu. In February, Queen Mother Halaevalu Mata'aho Tuita paid a private visit to China. In April, Minister of Labor, Commerce and Industries Lisiate 'Akolo traveled to China to attend the China-Pacific Island Countries Forum on Eco-Tech Cooperation. From late July to early August, Princess Salote Pilolevu Tuita attended the activities of the National Pavilion Day of Tonga on 2 August during the Shanghai World Expo and visited Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. In September, Princess Pilolevu attended the China International Friendship Cities Conference held in Shanghai and the Friendship Forum held in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, and visited Shandong Province afterwards.
In April, Prime Minister Feleti Vaka'uta Sevele sent a letter to Premier Wen Jiabao to express condolences on the earthquake in Yushu, Qinghai. In December, NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao sent congratulatory messages to newly elected Speaker of Parliament of Tonga Lord Lasike and new Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano respectively.
Bilateral exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade and other areas developed steadily. Two-way trade continued to grow. Projects built with Chinese assistance such as community health centers and the Ha'apai Middle School were completed and handed over to the Tongan side. Relevant projects proceeded smoothly, including the upgrading of the trunk highway in Tongatapu, the Vaipua Bridge in Vava'u, the downtown area in the capital city and renovation of the national highway. The Chinese government sent a team of medical experts to Tonga. The team of Chinese agricultural experts continued the work on the Model Farm project in Tongatapu.
