Vice Premier Wu Yi Meets with the US Ambassador to China Randt

2005/05/13

On May 13, Vice Premier Wu Yi of the State Council met in Zhongnanhai with the US Ambassador to China Randt.

Wu said that at present the China-US relations face the important opportunities of further improvement and development. The two sides should make joint efforts to faithfully implement the common consensuses reached between the leaders of the two countries in a bid to push for the constant development of China-US constructive partnership. Wu stressed that the mutually beneficial and win-win economic and trade cooperation between China and the US brings about tangible benefits to the two peoples and serves as the strong driving force behind the development of bilateral ties. As to the problems in the process of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, China always insists on properly solving them through consultations from a strategic perspective and in the principles of "equality, mutual benefit and development" so as to avoid imposing political conditions on economic and trade questions and protect the overall situation of the bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

Randt noted that the US and China must build up their cooperative relations. The US attaches importance to strengthening the economic and trade cooperation with China, believing that it complies with the fundamental interest of the two countries. The US expects to maintain communications and dialogue with China in that regard.

Both sides also held talks on the questions of each other's concern. Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing was present at the meeting.
