Li Zhaoxing Meets with US Secretary of State Rice

2005/09/21

On September 20, 2005, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing who was attending the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly met with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in New York.

Both sides agreed to make joint efforts to faithfully implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state during their meeting in New York earlier so as to promote the healthy and stable progress of the constructive cooperative relations between China and the US.

Li noted that the Taiwan question is the most sensitive and important issue of China-US relations. China admires that President Bush reiterated adherence to the one-China policy and observance of the three China-US joint communiqués when meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York and hopes the US fulfills its commitment to working with China to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and the general situation of China-US relations.

Rice said that the US understands the sensitivity of the Taiwan question and the one-China policy of the US government will remain unchanged.

Both sides made positive comments on the progress of the fourth round of six-party talks in Beijing and exchanged opinions on other international and regional issues of common concern.
