On the evening of May 29, 2004, Chinese President Hu Jintao held a phone conversation with US President George W. Bush upon request. Bush briefed Hu on the recent submission of the draft resolution on Iraq by the US to the United Nations Security Council, indicating his country's hope to continue cooperation with China in this regard. At the same time, noting that he understands China's concern over the Taiwan issue, Bush strongly reiterated that the US would follow the one-China policy, adhere to the three China-US joint communiqués and oppose "Taiwan independence". Hu said that the correct way of properly addressing the Iraqi issue is to completely resume Iraq's sovereignty, hold a just democratic election as soon as possible, forge a new Iraqi government with broad representation, and at the same time give play to the important role of the United Nations. China supports the UN Security Council to pass a new resolution and hopes that all parties will promote the process of consultation with an active, pragmatic and responsible attitude so as to reach consensus at the earliest date possible. Talking about the Taiwan issue, Hu stressed that the separatist activities by the forces seeking "Taiwan independence" remain the biggest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, noting that China hopes the US will take concrete actions to honor its commitments to adhering to the one-China policy, complying with the three Sino-US joint communiqués and opposing "Taiwan independence" and will not send any erroneous signal to the Taiwan authorities. Both heads of state noted that joint efforts would be continued to push Sino-US constructive cooperative relations towards continuous development.
