Wu Bangguo Meets with Canadian Prime Minister, Saying that China Attaches Great Importance to Developing Relations with Canada

On January 21, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress (NPC) met with Prime Minister Martin of Canada at the Great Hall of the People.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties betweenChina and Canada 35 years ago, bilateral relations have witnessed constant development; leaders of both countries have maintained frequent contacts and the economic and trade relations have been growing fast. Both sides carry out sound cooperation on multilateral occasions. China and Canada are two influential countries and China attaches great importance to developing relations with Canada, said Wu.

Wu also noted that the NPC of China enjoys good relations with both the Senate and the House of Commons of Canada. The task forces have also conducted sound exchanges and cooperation. The NPC of China is willing to make joint efforts with Canadian Parliament to strengthen exchanges, deepen cooperation, broaden understanding, enhance mutual trust and further promote China-Canada comprehensive cooperative partnership.

Martin said that his visit is successful and both sides have reached wide common consensus on the cooperation in every field, which will greatly drive the Canada-China relations. He agreed that the legislative bodies of both countries should strengthen exchanges. He was convinced that the exchanges would propel Canada-China cooperation in the areas of economy and trade and enhance mutual understanding.
