On the afternoon of June 6, 2005, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Wu Bangguo met in the Great Hall of the People with Speaker of the Senate of the Canadian Federal Parliament Daniel Hays. Wu said the overall development of the relations between China and Canada has been smooth since the establishment of diplomatic ties. Over the past few years, the comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and Canada has shown a sound momentum of development with increasing political mutual trust, closer economic and trade relations, surging trade volume, deepened exchanges and cooperation in education, science, technology and culture as well as enhanced consultation and cooperation on major international and regional issues. We would like to take the opportunity of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries to appropriately address issues of mutual concern and boost the development of China-Canada comprehensive cooperative partnership with joint efforts. Wu said China's NPC has maintained close contacts with the Canadian parliament. With expanding exchanges between parliament leaders, ad hoc committees and parliamentary exchanges associations, the two countries have conducted good cooperation in the legislative area. China's NPC is ready to continue the sound momentum of exchanges and cooperation with the Canadian parliament, deepen mutual understanding, and enhance the friendship between the peoples so as to inject new contents and vitality to bilateral relations. Hays agreed with Wu on his views on bilateral relations and the exchanges between the legislative bodies of the two countries, reiterating that the government and parliament of Canada will continue to stick to the one-China policy. He said Canada attaches great importance to developing relations with China. The Canadian Federal Parliament has conducted exchanges at various levels with China's NPC in personnel exchange, legislation and supervision. With this visit, he hoped to promote bilateral exchanges, explore new areas and ways of cooperation, and push forward China-Canada friendly relations.
