2005/09/07

On September 6, 2005, Chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress Wu Bangguo arrived in New York by a special plane at 4:00 pm local time, to attend the Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments to be held at the United Nations Headquarters from September 7th to 9th.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, as well as the 5th anniversary of the United Nations Millennium Summit and the Parliament Speakers World Conference in the Millennium. The Inter-Parliamentarian Union and the United Nations agreed to convene the Conference of Parliament Speakers before the UN Summit with the aim of considering the implementation of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and discussing how to seize the opportunity to respond to global challenges more effectively through strengthened multi-lateral cooperation.

Wu will attend the opening ceremony of the Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, deliver a significant speech at the plenary session, and chair the session as the first vice president of the conference. Wu will engage broadly with parliamentarian chairs and key persons of international organizations during the conference and exchange opinions on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues of common concern so as to enhance the exchanges and cooperation among parliaments of different countries in the world and promote friendly and cooperative relationship between China and other countries.

Major companions including Chairman Wu's wife Zhang Ruizhen and Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the National People's Congress Sheng Huaren arrived by the same plane. Lu Congmin, vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress had arrived earlier. Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Wang Guangya, Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong and Counsel General to New York Liu Biwei welcomed Wu at the Kennedy International Airport.

It is sunny with few clouds in New York today. When the VIP motorcade approached the Waldorf Astoria where Chairman Wu was going to stay, 1500 overseas Chinese, scholars, students and representatives of Chinese-funded agencies in the United States clustered by the streets with welcome banner, waving China's national five-star red flag, dancing lion dances and striking waist drums, to warmly welcome Chairman Wu.

Wu left Rabat, capital of Morocco on the noon of September 6 local time after his successful formal visit to the country. The first vice-speaker of the Moroccan house of representatives Driss•Sentissi and Chinese Ambassador to Morocco Cheng Tao saw him off at the airport.
