On May 19, 2008, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi met with a delegation of the East West Institute (EWI) headed by its President, Founder and CEO John Edwin Mroz. The members of the delegation extended profound condolences over the heavy casualties caused by the devastating earthquake in Sichuan and expressed admiration for the swift and effective relief actions of the Chinese government and people as well as their unity and courage. Liu thanked for the support and assistance offered by the international community including the United States and briefed the guests on China's disaster relief efforts. Both sides also exchanged views on Sino-U.S. relations and international and regional issues of common concern.
