Wen Jiabao Meets with U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner

On June 2, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who is also special representative of the U.S. President, in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

During the meeting, Wen said China-U.S. relations are now at a new starting point and facing opportunities for further development. Both sides should handle bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, give full play to the role of the China-U.S. strategic and economic dialogue, continuously consolidate and expand the foundation of common interest and earnestly respect and accommodate core interest of each other. "The foremost task for both countries is to work more closely to address the global economic downturn, oppose protectionism in trade and investment, promote reform in international financial system and tighten oversight of international reserve currency so as to ensure the stability and growth of China, the United States and the world at large," Wen said.

Geithner said the U.S. and China share a lot of common interests. The U.S. is ready to establish a stronger cooperative relationship with China based on mutual respect to jointly tackle the international financial crisis, promote the world economic recovery and reform the international financial system. The U.S. hopes to enhance cooperation with China in the fields of trade, energy efficiency and climate change and jointly commit to maintaining regional and world peace and stability.

Vice Premier Wang Qishan, Minister of Finance Xie Xuren and other officials attended the meeting.
