Dai Bingguo Meets with Steinberg

On June 5, 2009, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met with United States Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Zhongnanhai.

Dai said thanks to the joint efforts of both sides, China-U.S. relations have currently shown a positive momentum of development. China is ready to work with the U.S. to seize the opportunity and momentum, strengthen exchanges at high and other levels and prepare for the first bilateral Strategic and Economic Dialogue. He urged both sides to deepen exchanges and cooperation in all areas and properly handle major and sensitive issues so as to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship.

Steinberg said President Barack Obama and the U.S. government attach great importance to U.S.-China relations and will commit to enhancing exchanges and cooperation with China in all areas. He pledged that his country will give full play to the role of the Strategic and Economic Dialogue mechanism and push bilateral ties for more positive outcome on the existing basis.

Both sides also exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and other issues of common concern.
