On the afternoon of April 27, 2011, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard at the Great Hall of the People. Speaking highly of the "pragmatic, friendly and reciprocal" policies which Gillard has pursued toward China since she took office in September 2010, Hu said the two sides should jointly implement the outcome of bilateral high-level exchanges of visits and make efforts in the following three aspects. First, respect each other and enhance political mutual trust. He urged both sides to appropriately handle sensitive issues. Both sides should firmly grasp the overall direction of bilateral ties and make sure that bilateral relations continue on a sound and stable track. Second, conduct mutually beneficial cooperation for common development. Hu said the two countries should fully display their complementary advantages and turn extraordinary potentials of cooperation into substantial benefits of cooperation to uplift the level of pragmatic cooperation. Third, enhance dialogue and expand multilateral cooperation. The two sides should strengthen communication and coordination on regional and international issues concerning the G20 mechanism and global challenges, and make joint efforts for peace, stability and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole so as to push China-Australia relations to a higher level, Hu said. Gillard said since the establishment of diplomatic ties, both sides have been advancing their ties based on equality, mutual respect, common interests and mutually beneficial cooperation. Australia firmly adheres to the one-China policy and views its relationship with China as one of its most important international relationships. She also said Australia attaches high importance to the further development of bilateral ties. Gillard said that during her current visit, she exchanged in-depth views with the Chinese side on cooperation in a wide range of areas and both sides signed several new cooperation agreements. Australia will join hands with China to grasp these opportunities and boost bilateral relations to new highs, she said.
