Tang Jiaxuan Meets with President Akayev and other Kyrgyz Leaders

From December 9 to 10, 2004, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan paid a formal visit to Kyrgyzstan at invitation. During his visit Tang met with President Akayev, Prime Minister Tanayev and Foreign Minister Aitmatov respectively. Both sides exchanged opinions on bilateral ties and international and regional issues of common concern. During his meeting on December 9, Akayev said that in recent years bilateral cooperation in political, economic, cultural, humane and other areas keeps accelerating and Kyrgyzstan-China relations have reached a high level. The future development of Kyrgyzstan is closely linked with comprehensive cooperation with China and to develop relations with China is the priority of Kyrgyz foreign policy. He noted that both countries have signed the 10-Year Cooperation Program and expressed confidence that the document will be implemented effectively, adding that Kyrgyzstan-China cooperation in maintaining regional security and fighting against the "three vices" has achieved fruitful results and Kyrgyzstan will continue to strengthen cooperation with China in security area. 2004 is a year when China-Kyrgyzstan relations made new significant achievements. The two heads of state reached important consensus on deepening China-Kyrgyzstan good-neighborly friendship. Chinese Premier and Kyrgyz Prime Minister signed the 10-Year Cooperation Program to draw a long-range plan for bilateral cooperation in all fields. Bilateral economic and trade cooperation made new breakthroughs and the project of restoring the road linking China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan proceeded steadily. Both sides supported each other firmly on major issues involving independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and conducted sound cooperation in fighting against the "three vices". The purpose of this visit is to further consolidate and strengthen the already existing friendship between the two countries, expand and deepen the all-round bilateral cooperation and make joint efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, according to Tang. At present Kyrgyzstan is maintaining political stability, sustained economic growth and gradual improvement of people's living standards, which serves the basic interests of the Kyrgyz people and helps promote the stability and development of the region. We are glad to see the achievements and hope that Kyrgyzstan will score greater results in the national construction in the future, said Tang. Akayev said that over years China has provided valuable support and assistance to Kyrgyzstan for its economic construction and social progress which the Kyrgyz people appreciate deeply. Tang and Akayev also exchanged opinions on the current situation of Uzbekistan, agreeing that they will respect the choice of the people of Uzbekistan and hope that the local situation will get stable as early as possible. During meeting with Prime Minister Tanayev on December 10, both sides exchanged views mainly on the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. Commenting positively on the achievements made in bilateral economic and trade relations since the beginning of this year, they said that both countries will make best use of their geological closeness and economic complementarities, tap potentials to strengthen cooperation in areas like road, hydropower, border trade and high-tech and enhance bilateral economic and trade cooperation to new levels constantly in a bid to benefit the two peoples. After the meeting Tang and Tanayev signed the China-Kyrgyzstan Economic & Technological Cooperation Agreement. On the same day Tang also met with Foreign Minister Aitmatov. Tang arrived at Bishkek and started formal visit to Kyrgyzstan on local time December 9.
