President Jiang Zemin Meets Moldavian President Voronin

On July 20, 2001, President Jiang Zemin held talks with Moldavian President Vladimir Voronin, during which they exchanged views and reached important consensus on how to further develop bilateral relations and regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Extending warm welcome to Jiang, Voronin said that Jiang's state visit to his country is a firm support to Moldova which is at a critical juncture of development. He said Jiang's visit is of great importance to strengthening the cooperation and friendship between the two countries and two peoples, adding that Moldova thinks highly of Jiang's ongoing visit.

Jiang thanked Voronin for his kind invitation which enables him to have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Moldova. He expressed appreciation for Voronin's commitment to developing relations with China. He went on to say that his ongoing visit is aimed at joining Moldova in furthering mutual understanding and boosting bilateral friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries in the new century.

Jiang noted that bilateral relations have been developing very well since the two countries forged diplomatic ties nearly 10 years ago, adding that the leaders of the two countries have maintained frequent contacts, and bilateral exchanges at various level have constantly expanded. He went on to say that bilateral cooperation in such fields as politics, economy and trade, agriculture, science and technology, culture, education and public health, adding that the two countries have rendered each other assistance and have cooperated with each other in international affairs. He said that China is satisfied with the development of bilateral ties. He said that China is thankful of Moldova for its consistent one-China policy and support to China's reunification cause, adding that China will, as always, support Moldova in its efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Voronin said that Moldova will steadfastly support the Chinese government's principled position on the Taiwan question and the reunification cause of China.

Jiang said that though different in size, both China and Moldova are equal members in the international community, adding that it serves the interests of both sides to develop friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries. He went on to say that China stands ready to further intensify and augment bilateral exchanges and cooperation between competent departments of the two countries in all areas and at all levels on the basis of mutual respect, mutual benefit, equality and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. He said that China-Moldova Joint Statement will be signed after the talks, which will lay down the basic principles and major direction for bilateral relations and cooperation. He added that the two countries will also sign cooperation documents on culture and education and will further enrich the contents of bilateral cooperation. He expressed the conviction that through the concerted efforts of both sides, China-Moldova friendly relations and cooperation will enjoy even greater development in the new century.

Jiang said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of economic cooperation and trade between the two countries. He noted that bilateral economic relations and trade have enjoyed continuous development in recent years, with bilateral trade volume increasing rapidly, adding that he hopes that the momentum can be maintained. He went on to say that in order to promote the development of bilateral economic relations and trade, the role of the mixed economic and trade committee of the two countries should be given full play and the two sides should encourage businessmen of the two countries to have direct contacts, deepen mutual understanding and conduct cooperation.

Voronin said that the Moldavian is very interested in augmenting economic cooperation and trade with China, expressing the hope that specific results can be yielded in areas where cooperation is possible.

They also exchanged views on matters pertaining to bilateral economic cooperation and trade.

Jiang said that the direct contacts between the leaders of the two countries can play an important role in promoting the development of bilateral relations. He invited Voronin to visit China at his convenience.

They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

After the talks, Jiang and Voronin signed a joint statement. Representatives of the two countries also exchanged notes on the provision of free assistance by the Chinese government to the Moldavian government, a pact on cooperation in education and a cultural cooperation program from 2002 to 2004 between the Ministry of Culture of China and that of Moldova. Jiang and Voronin also held a joint press conference.
