President Jiang Zemin Meets President of Moldavian Parliament Ostapciuk

On July 20, 2001, visiting President Jiang Zemin met with Eugenia Ostapciuk, President of the Parliament of Moldova at the Parliamentary House.

Expressing pleasure of meeting with Jiang at the Parliamentary House, Ostapciuk said that Jiang's current state visit to Moldova at the invitation of President Voronin is a very important event, adding that the Moldavian Parliament warmly welcomes Jiang.

Ostapciuk briefed Jiang on the Moldavian Parliament, expressing the willingness of the Moldavian Parliament to intensify exchanges and cooperation with the National People's Congress of China.

Expressing the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Ostapciuk, Jiang conveyed the greetings from Chairman Li Peng of the NPC of China to her.

Jiang said that he and President Voronin talked on good terms in the just concluded talks, during which they had an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern. He went on to say that the two sides agree that bilateral relations have developed very smoothly in recent years, bilateral cooperation still enjoys bright prospects and that they stand ready to work together to ensure the sound development of bilateral friendly relations and cooperation in various fields in the new century .He said that the joint statement he signed with Voronin has set the guiding principles for the development of bilateral relations in the 21st century, adding that the pact on educational cooperation between the two governments and the cultural cooperation program between 2002 to 2004 between the cultural ministries of the two countries signed by the two sides have added new contents to bilateral cooperation in specific fields.

Jiang pointed out that parliamentary contacts are part and parcel of state-to-state relations, adding that the National People's Congress of China and the Moldavian Parliament have very good cooperative ties and their leaders have maintained frequent contacts. He noted that the CPPCC of China and the Moldavian Parliament also have very close ties. He voiced the hope that the two parliaments will conduct more exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and intensify cooperation so as to promote the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Jiang said that China supports Moldova in its efforts to uphold national independence, reunification and territorial integrity. He went on to say that the question of Taiwan bears on China's reunification and territorial integrity and the national feelings of the Chinese people. He expressed appreciation for the understanding and support the Moldavian government and political parties have rendered China on the question of Taiwan, expressing the hope that China can continue to enjoy Moldova's support.

Ostapciuk reiterated Moldova's adherence to the One-China principle.
