President Jiang Zemin Meets Ukrainian Prime Minister Anatoly Kinakh

On July 21, 2001, President Jiang Zemin met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Anatoly Kinakh at the Ukrainian State Guesthouse where he stayed.
Expressing pleasure of meeting with Kinakh, Jiang conveyed the greetings from Premier Zhu Rongji to him. Jiang noted that Kinakh visited China on many occasions as the Chairman of the Ukrainian side of the China-Ukraine Mixed Economic and Trade Committee, adding that China thinks very highly of the important contributions he has made to promoting bilateral economic cooperation and trade. Expressing pleasure of meeting with Jiang again, Kinakh said that Ukraine and China have established constructive and close friendly relations and cooperation. He went on to say that bilateral economic cooperation and trade still enjoy great prospects, adding that effective cooperation mechanism has been put into place between the two governments. He said that these mechanisms should be put to better use in the future, adding that the two countries should also intensify their cooperation in scientific and financial sectors. Kinakh said that the experiences China has garnered in its reform and opening-up is very important to Ukraine, adding that Ukraine is very much in favor of China's principles in building socialist market economy. He went on to say that Ukraine will make reform and opening-up a long-term strategy and will learn from the China's experiences. Jiang said that as friends, the relations between China and Ukraine have been developing in a stable and sound manner in the past 10 years, adding that bilateral cooperation and exchanges have been constantly expanding and deepening in such areas as politics, economy and trade, science and technology, education and culture. He noted that the two countries have maintained the good tradition of active consultation and close cooperation, which has yielded satisfying results. Jiang said that his ongoing visit to Ukraine in the first year of the new century is aimed at not only building on past achievements in bilateral relations, but also mapping out a blueprint for the development of bilateral relations in the new century together with the Ukrainian side. He said that the Chinese side stands ready to work alongside the Ukrainian side so as to bring China-Ukraine friendly cooperation to a new high. Jiang said that bilateral economic cooperation and trade has been very satisfying, with last year's bilateral trade volume increasing by 40% as opposed to the previous year and with bilateral trade volume from January to May this year increasing by more than 100% as opposed to the same period last year. He went on to say that he and President Kuchma agree that the two sides are still confronting with formidable tasks in taping the great potential in bilateral economic cooperation and trade, adding that China stands ready to conduct close cooperation with Ukraine in even wider areas. They also exchanged views on other issues of mutual concern.
