2002/08/29

On the afternoon of August 27, 2002, President Jiang Zemin met with President of the Parliament of Moldova Eugenia Ostapciuk at Zhongnanhai. The two sides held a cordial and friendly talk.

President Jiang welcomed Ostapciuk to lead a delegation to visit China. He said that on the sight of the old friend, he recalled the good moments of his visit to Moldova last year, which was brief but quite impressive. He added that during that visit he had a good talk with President Vladimir Voronin and got to know Ostapciuk and other Moldovan friends, so he feels extremely happy to meet Ostapciuk again one year later in Beijing. He also extended congratulations to the Moldovan guests on the National Day of Moldova, and asked Ostapciuk to pass on his cordial regards to President Voronin.

On bilateral ties, Jiang said that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Moldovan diplomatic relations, and since then bilateral ties between the two countries have become better and better due to the concerted efforts by both sides. He especially mentioned that since President Voronin took office, the two sides have witnessed intensified mutual political trust, continuous exchanges of high-level visits, expanded reciprocal cooperation and mutual support in international affairs.

Jiang stressed that it is in the fundamental interests of both peoples to develop Sino-Moldovan ties. He noted that the Chinese government is willing to expand cooperation with Moldova to achieve common development on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence. Jiang also said that he is fully confident of the bright future of Sino-Moldova relations. Seeing that the National People's Congress (NPC) of China and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have good relationship with the Moldovan parliament, he suggested them have more exchanges and increase mutual friendship.

Ostapciuk passed on President Voronin's regards to President Jiang. She said that Moldova-China relations have made still greater progress since Jiang's visit to Moldova. She briefed Jiang on the domestic situation in Moldova and expressed thanks for the support China has offered in the long run. She said she is glad to see the reform in various fields in China and the great achievements China has made in economy, culture and social fields. Ostapciuk believed that her current visit to China would help increase mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of the two countries and further strengthen bilateral relations.
