Hu Jintao Meets with Tajik President Rakhmonov

On June 14, 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in Xi Jiao Guesthouse Shanghai with Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov, who was here to attend the 6th Meeting of the Council of Heads of Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Hu said that over the past one year, bilateral cooperation has scored new achievements in the areas of economy, trade, transportation, communications and project contract, maintained mutual cooperation in international and regional affairs and jointly promoted regional and world peace, stability and prosperity. China thanks for Tajikistan's resolute support on the questions related to Taiwan and combating the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces and will as always support Tajikistan's path to development suitable to its national conditions, as well as its efforts in safeguarding internal stability and promoting national development. China would like to work with Tajikistan to push for continuous progress of bilateral relations to ensure that both countries will remain good neighbors, friends and partners forever.

Rakhmonov indicated that this year marks the 14th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and bilateral relations have been enhanced rapidly with close exchanges at all levels and economic and trade cooperation steadily deepened. Both sides have conducted effective exchanges and cooperation in the areas of culture and education and bilateral relations have had a firm legal basis. Both countries are close neighbors, friends, and reliable partners. Tajikistan will resolutely pursue the one-China policy and support China's national reunification. Tajikistan hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in the fields of waterpower resources development, road construction and energy and would also like to conduct all-round cooperation with China in all areas.

With regard to strengthening SCO cooperation, Hu pointed out that this summit is of great significance and it is believed that with the joint efforts of all parties, the summit will fulfill its target of building up mutual trust, promoting unity and deepening cooperation. Hu indicated that to implement the agreement on narcotics control cooperation signed at the 2004 Tashkent Summit and conduct effective drug control cooperation is of great significance to safeguarding stability of this region and SCO member states. Tajikistan is the initiator of SCO narcotics control cooperation. China would like to support and assist Tajikistan in this task to ensure practical achievements at the earliest date possible.

Rakhmonov noted that in the past five years, the SCO has been continuously developed and it has become an important mechanism for safeguarding security, stability and development of this region based on the "Shanghai Spirit". Tajikistan would like to strengthen cooperation with China in combating the "three forces" and drug control.

Following the meeting, Hu and Rakhmonov attended the signing ceremony of related cooperation documents between both countries.

Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) & Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee Chen Liangyu, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan and other officials attended the meeting and the signing ceremony.
