Wu Bangguo Meets with Turkmenian President, Expressing Willingness to Deepen Pragmatic Cooperation

On April 4, 2006, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Turkmenian President Saparmurat Niyazov in the Great Hall of the People. Wu said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, friendly cooperative relations have witnessed sound and smooth development. Both sides have kept close high-level exchanges and respected each other's concerns with mutual political trust continuously deepened and fruitful cooperation in all areas. In recent years, bilateral trade volume has increased year after year and maintained sound momentum of rapid growth. Both sides have also maintained close communication and cooperation in international affairs. China appreciates Turkmenistan's persistent support for China on the Taiwan, Tibet, combating the "three forces" and other questions and will continue to support Turkmenistan's efforts in safeguarding state sovereignty and developing national economy. Wu said that China attaches great importance to bilateral relations and deems Turkmenistan its important partner in Central Asia. Both economies are highly complementary to each other and enjoy huge potential and broad prospect for cooperation. China would like to work with Turkmenistan to steadily deepen pragmatic cooperation in the areas of economy, trade and energy and push bilateral friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation to one new level after another. Wu said that the NPC of China supports strengthened bilateral cooperation, which conforms to fundamental interest of both peoples and is conducive to regional peace and development. The NPC of China and the Turkmenian National Assembly have played an important role in political life of their respective countries. The exchanges between the two parliaments are an important part of bilateral relations and to strengthen their cooperation can advance friendship between both peoples and push for sustainable development of bilateral relations. China would like to conduct exchanges and cooperation at multiple levels with the Turkmenian National Assembly and hopes that both sides will learn from each other in strengthening and improving democracy, building the legal system and governing the state and make new contributions to comprehensive, in-depth development of bilateral relations. Niyazov noted that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, both sides have always maintained sound political relations and close economic and trade cooperation. During his current visit to China, he held sound talks with President Hu Jintao and a lot of achievements have been scored. Turkmenistan would like to work with China to implement these achievements, deepen exchanges and cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, energy, infrastructure construction and culture, strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs and push for further development of bilateral friendly cooperative relations. Turkmenistan will continue to adhere to the one-China principle. Niyazov indicated that the history of the Turkmenian National Assembly is still not long and the important role of the NPC of China in state political life will play an exemplary role for the Turkmenian National Assembly. Turkmenistan hopes that the two parliaments will strengthen exchanges and establish long-term friendly cooperative relations. Wu also introduced China's developments.
