Wu Bangguo and Jia Qinglin Meet with Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine

Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the Chinese People's Political and Consultative Conference Jia Qinglin met in the Great Hall of the People with Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine Vladimir Litvin respectively on April 11. Wu said since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Ukraine, bilateral relations have witnessed sound and stable development with frequent top-level exchanges of visit, enhanced political mutual trust and smoothly operating cooperation mechanisms in economy and trade, science and technology, military technology, aeronautics and culture as well as growing scale of cooperation. Both countries have been rendering mutual support on important questions of each other's concern and close cooperation in international affairs. China is satisfied with the achievements in bilateral relations. He pointed out China and Ukraine enjoy strong economic complementarities and China would like to work with Ukraine to promote bilateral pragmatic cooperation in economy and trade as well as the reciprocal cooperation between business communities, especially large enterprises, in a bid to uplift bilateral relations to a new level.

Wu Bangguo thanked Ukraine for consistently supporting China's stance on Taiwan, Tibetan and human rights issues. He said the National People's Congress of China is willing to conduct friendly exchanges through a variety of channels and at a number of levels with the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine to enhance mutual understanding and jointly promote the development of China-Ukraine friendly relations.

Litvin said to develop Ukraine-China relations is in the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples. The Supreme Soviet of Ukraine would like to enhance exchanges and communication with the National People's Congress of China so as to promote the building of bilateral communication mechanisms. Litvin expressed understanding and support for China's formulation of the Anti-Secession Law.

Wu Bangguo and Litvin also attended the signing ceremony of the Cooperative Agreement between the General Office of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China and the General Office of the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine. Jia said the China-Ukraine friendship enjoys a long history. Bilateral friendly cooperative relations have maintained a positive momentum of development since the establishment of diplomatic relations 13 years ago. Both countries highly prioritize the development of bilateral relations, try to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields and render support for each other on matters concerning national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. These are the major reasons contributing to the smooth development of bilateral relations. China would like to make joint efforts with Ukraine to boost the friendly cooperative relations between the two countries. Jia Qinglin expressed gratitude and appreciations to Litvin for his position on the Taiwan issue.

Jia Qinglin indicated the Chinese People's Political and Consultative Conference has kept close exchanges with the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine, and would like to continue friendly exchanges and intensify cooperation so as to contribute to bilateral relations and the friendship between the two peoples. Litvin said Ukraine gives priority to developing relations with China and hopes to see expanding cooperation in various fields between the two countries as well as closer cooperation in international organizations. He stressed Ukraine sticks to the one-China principle on the Taiwan issue, understands and supports the idea of "one country two systems". Ukraine will not engage in any official contacts and cooperation with Taiwan.
