Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Meets with Petro Poroshenko, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with visiting Petro Poroshenko, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse on July 21, 2005. Both sides exchanged views on bilateral ties and regional and international issues of common concern.

Li said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, China-Ukraine relations have developed smoothly, and the two countries have supported each other on major principle issues concerning national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The political trust between the two countries has been expanded, and the mutually beneficial cooperation in such areas as economy, trade, science and technology has been furthered, with fruitful results achieved. The Chinese side appreciates Ukraine for adhering to the one-China policy and thanks Ukraine for upholding the stand to support the Chinese government on the Taiwan, Tibet and human rights issues. The Chinese side is willing to deepen the cooperation with Ukraine in all fields and push bilateral ties forward.

Poroshenko said developing relations with China is one of the top priorities of Ukraine's diplomacy, and the two countries have maintained close cooperation in the fields of politics, economy and trade and achieved notable results, which the Ukrainian side feels satisfied with. The Ukrainian government will strictly observe its commitment in the bilateral political documents and continue its adherence of the one-China policy.

Poroshenko and his delegation arrived in Beijing for a visit to China on July 20 at the invitation of Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.
