Jia Qinglin Meets with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yanukovych

On October 31, 2006, Jia Qingling, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev. Jia first conveyed the cordial greetings and best wishes from Premier Wen Jiabao to Yanukovych, who expressed thanks and ask Jia to convey his sincere greetings and best wishes to Premier Wen.

Jia said since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral ties have maintained a sound momentum of sound and steady development with positive achievements in cooperation in all areas. The trade volume last year reached 3.28 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 15 times over the early period after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Scientific and technological cooperation has been developing smoothly and the China-Ukraine scientific and technological park in Ji'nan and other projects have become highlights of bilateral cooperation. Exchanges in the humanities area are expanding and the social basis of bilateral friendship has been continuously consolidated. Both sides have also maintained close coordination in international affairs. Jia appreciated Yanukovych and the Ukrainian government for adhering to the one-China policy and attaching importance to the development of ties with China.

Jia said the economic and trade cooperation has entered a period of rapid development and enjoys huge potentials. To strengthen cooperation conforms to the long-term and fundamental interests of both sides and is also the common aspiration of the two peoples. Jia expressed China's willingness to strengthen political trust and deepen trade cooperation with Ukraine, in particular in the areas of high tech, aviation and aerospace in a bid to push for bilateral ties and mutually beneficial cooperation. He hoped that the two countries will try to improve trade mix, expand mutual investment and advance cooperation in high-tech projects and agriculture to pave the way for businesses of both sides to invest in each other so as to realize mutual benefit and common development.

Yanukovych said the friendship between the two countries goes back to ancient times and the Ukrainian people always hold profound friendly feelings towards the Chinese people. After the establishment of diplomatic ties, there are no issues left over from history between the two sides and bilateral ties and economic and trade cooperation enjoy a sound basis. The Ukrainian government attaches great importance to relations with China and will continue to unswervingly adhere to the one-China policy. Yanukovych said his country is ready to strengthen political dialogue and keep closer bilateral and multilateral cooperation with China.

Yanukovych said Ukraine is committed to its economic development and is ready to learn from China's useful experience. Ukraine's unique geographical location can also play a positive role in expanding economic and trade ties between China and other European countries. Ukraine is ready to do its utmost to enhance cooperation with China in the fields of economy, trade, transportation, aviation, aerospace, energy and investment.

On the same day, Jia met in the hotel where he stayed with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk. Both sides held friendly talks on furthering China-Ukraine relations.

On November 1, Jia visited Aviant, an aircraft assembly plant and the Antonov aircraft manufacturing plant in Kiev and inspected the cultural developments there. On the evening of the same day, Jia met in the hotel where he stayed with the staff of the Chinese Embassy in Ukraine and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions, Chinese students and overseas Chinese.
