President Hu Jintao Meets with Uzbek President Karimov

On June 14, 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in Xi Jiao Guesthouse Shanghai with Uzbek President Islam Karimov, who was here to attend the 6th Meeting of the Council of Heads of Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Hu said that last year both sides signed the bilateral treaty on friendly cooperative partnership, which has pushed bilateral relations into a new stage for development. The mutual political support and closer cooperation between both sides have contributed to regional and world peace and stability. China thanks for Uzbekistan's resolute support on questions related toTaiwan and combating the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces and will as always support Uzbekistan's development suitable to its national conditions. He indicated that currently bilateral economic and trade cooperation has been developing rapidly with huge potential. China would like to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with Uzbekistan in economy, trade, energy and other areas. China is willing to work with Uzbekistan to push for continuous development of bilateral relations to ensure that both countries and their people will remain good neighbors, friends and partners forever.

Hu pointed out that it conforms to the common interest of all countries of this region including China and Uzbekistan to combat the "three forces" including "East Turkistan" and safeguard this region's security and stability. Uzbekistan, as a hosting country of the regional counter-terrorism agency, has made important contributions for this agency to be successfully launched and play its due role. China would like to work with Uzbekistan and other member states to continue cooperating and supporting the work of the executive committee of this agency.

Karimov noted that each of his meetings with President Hu has helped push for development of bilateral relations and Uzbekistan is satisfied with the rapid development of bilateral cooperation in all areas. Whenever encountering difficulties, the Uzbek people have gained support and assistance and felt sincere friendship from the Chinese people. Uzbekistan attaches great importance to bilateral relations and would like to strengthen cooperation with China in the areas of politics, economy, trade, education, medicine and combating the "three forces" and steadily enhance the level of bilateral relations. Uzbekistan is full of confidence about the future of bilateral relations.

Karimov said that the heads of SCO member states will meet in Shanghai again the next day, which is of great historic significance. Uzbekistan would like to cooperate with China to ensure the great success of this meeting.

Following the meeting, Hu and Karimov attended the signing ceremony of related cooperation documents between the two countries.

Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) & Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee Chen Liangyu, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan and other officials attended the meeting and the signing ceremony.
