Chairman Wu Bangguo Meets with Romanian President Basescu

2006/05/19

On the afternoon of May 18, 2006, visiting Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China met with Romanian President Traian Basescu and both sides held talks in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.

Wu first conveyed the cordial greetings from President Hu Jintao to President Basescu. Basescu thanked for this and asked Wu to convey his best wishes for President Hu.

Wu said that during his visit to China a month ago, President Basescu reached with President Hu important four-point consensus of maintaining high-level exchanges, expanding economic and trade cooperation, promoting humanities exchanges and strengthening multilateral cooperation on deepening bilateral relations. His current visit is aimed at implementing the above-mentioned consensus and pushing for development of bilateral comprehensive friendly cooperative partnership. China has already started implementing the "11th Five-Year Plan", while Romania will soon accede to the EU. This will offer wide space and a rare opportunity for mutually beneficial cooperation between both sides. It is hoped that they will make joint efforts to elevate bilateral economic and trade cooperation to a new level.

Wu said that the Chinese side is delighted to witness social stability, economic growth and continuous improvement of people's livelihood in Romania in recent years. China deems Romania a reliable friend and cooperative partner and thanks Romania for always adhering to the one-China policy.

Basescu noted that bilateral relations enjoy a time-honored history. Over the past decades, Romania's successive governments, parties and political forces have all held friendly feelings towards China and committed to developing relations with it. With regard to the Taiwan question, Romania adheres to the one-China policy and this position will not change. Romania will as always strengthen exchanges and cooperation in all areas with China, push for the process of large program cooperation, deepen comprehensive friendly cooperative partnership and ensure bilateral traditional friendship to be passed on for generations.
