Wu Bangguo Meets Respectively with Speaker of the Upper House of the Kazak Parliament and Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan

On the afternoon of May 29, 2006, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, who was on his official goodwill visit to Russia and to attend the first meeting of the parliament speakers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries, met in the hotel where he stayed respectively with Speaker of the Upper House of the Kazak Parliament Nurtai Abykaev and Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan (lower house of parliament) Erkin Halilov.

When meeting with Abykaev, Wu said that both countries are important neighbors to each other, and since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have been developing smoothly and both sides have shown mutual political trust, economic complementarity and mutual security assistance for each other, which has brought tangible benefits to both countries and their people. President Hu Jintao and President Nursultan Nazarbayev jointly declared the establishment of bilateral strategic partnership last July, which has guided the direction for further development of bilateral relations. Wu indicated that the NPC of China would like to continue strengthening friendly exchanges with the Kazak Parliament, conduct contact in legislation and other areas and urge the implementation of agreements already reached and large programs in a bid to make new contributions to building up the friendship between both peoples and pushing for bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation.

Abykaev said that Kazakhstan makes positive comments on China's rapid development and its endeavor in reform and opening up and resolutely supports China's grand cause of peaceful reunification. He indicated that the Kazak Parliament will further develop friendly exchanges and cooperation with the NPC of China by approaching from the overall perspective of development of bilateral relations, actively urge the implementation of bilateral agreements and further strengthen bilateral coordination and cooperation in international and regional parliament organizations.

When meeting with Halilov, Wu made positive comments on bilateral relations. He noted that China attaches great importance to bilateral relations, deems Uzbekistan a reliable friend and important cooperative partner, and would like to work with Uzbekistan to strengthen friendly exchanges between the two parliaments and further push for bilateral cooperation in the areas of economy, trade and counter-terrorism so as to push bilateral friendly cooperative partnership to a new level.

Halilov fully agreed with Wu's comments on bilateral relations. He said that to develop relations with China is a priority of Uzbekistan's foreign policy. Uzbekistan highly appreciates China's foreign policy, resolutely pursues the one-China principle, would like to deepen bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, security and other areas, and welcomes Chinese businesses to invest and develop in Uzbekistan. The Uzbek Parliament would like to strengthen cooperation with the NPC of China in bilateral and multilateral areas, conduct parliamentary exchanges at all levels and jointly push for all-round development of bilateral relations.
