Wu Bangguo Meets with Latvian Parliament Chairwoman Udre

On August 18, 2006, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Latvian Parliament Chairwoman Ingrida Udre in the Great Hall of the People. Wu welcomed Udre to head a delegation to visit China on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. He said currently bilateral ties have become more mature and enriched. The mutual political trust has been strengthened and the economic and trade cooperation has been growing continuously with effective exchanges in the humanities area. Both sides have also conducted closer coordination and cooperation in international affairs. China will work together with Latvia to enhance political exchanges and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation to realize common development for the benefit of the two peoples. Wu noted recent years have witnessed frequent exchanges between top leaders, special committees and groups of friendship of the two parliaments, which helps push for bilateral ties and promote mutual understanding, trust and friendship between the two peoples. It is hoped that the two parliaments will continue to carry forward the tradition of friendly cooperation, strengthen all levels of exchanges and cooperation through various channels and learn from each other's experience in legislation, supervision and governing the country in a bid to push for bilateral ties. Udre said Latvia attaches great importance to developing relations with China. Expressing her appreciation of the constructive role China has played in international affairs, Udre said she hoped her China tour will not only help promote the existing friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries, especially the friendly exchanges between the Latvian parliament and China's NPC, but also provide more opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation in such areas as politics, economy, trade, science, technology, culture and education. Udre reiterated that Latvia would adhere to the one-China policy, which Wu appreciated.
