2006/12/21

On December 21, 2006, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Wu Bangguo met with Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the Great Hall of the People.

Wu spoke highly of the development of China-Kazakhstan ties. He said the two sides have maintained frequent high-level exchanges, deepened political trust and conducted fruitful cooperation on economy, trade, energy, security, and humanities since the diplomatic ties was forged 15 years. The two countries have cooperated well in the multilateral frameworks including the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, and have made positive contributions to regional and world peace and development, said Wu. China appreciates Kazakhstan's support on the Taiwan issue, the Tibet issue and combating East Turkestan, respects the development path chosen by the Kazakh people according to their national realities and is ready to work with Kazakhstan to push for bilateral ties, Wu said.

Wu said both the NPC of China and the Kazakh parliament play an important role in the state political life. "The two sides could learn from each other so as to boost the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and provide legal guarantee for the mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas," said Wu. The NPC will go on developing multi-channel and multi-sphere friendly exchanges with the Kazakh parliament and contribute to the in-depth development of Sino-Kazakh strategic partnership, Wu said.

Nazarbayev said broad consensus has been reached on further deepening bilateral ties during his current visit to China. The Kazakhstan-China Cooperation Strategy for the 21st Century signed on Dec. 20 is an important guiding document for the development of bilateral ties, he said, adding that the bilateral strategic partnership cannot develop without the participation and support of the two parliaments. The Kazakh parliament will enhance cooperation with China's NPC so to inject vigor and vitality into bilateral relations, he added.
