President Hu Jintao Meets with His Russian Counterpart Putin

On August 16, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Bishkek. Both leaders spoke highly of China-Russia ties, agreeing that the relations have been developing rapidly with increasing political trust and successful events of the China Year in Russia. Bilateral trade has seen strong growth with the trade mix further improved. The two sides pledged joint efforts to push the strategic cooperative partnership to a new level. Hu pointed out that in the second half of this year, both sides should focus their efforts in the following five aspects. First, he proposed both sides exchange views on bilateral relations, as well as major international and regional issues to coordinate positions and enrich the Sino-Russian strategic cooperation. Second, Hu urged both sides to seriously summarize the "National Year" activities, in which some good ways can be established as mechanisms in a bid to expand the new ways and approaches of friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation. Third, Hu suggested the work of the China-Russia commercial chamber of machinery and electric products should begin at an early date. Hu urged the two sides to speed up negotiations on the construction of the pipeline to transport crude oil and natural gas and expand mutual investment to promote cooperation on large projects. Fourth, he called for starting the implementation of local cooperation strategy as early as possible and formulating a medium- and long-term program for it. Fifth, Hu called for strengthening cooperation on protecting and using trans-border water resources and hoped the two sides would step up talks for inking an agreement in this regard. Echoing Hu, Putin called for establishing mechanisms for those of "National Year" activities which have yielded noticeable effects. He suggested relevant agencies of the two countries further strengthen communication and work out plans on implementing the Sino-Russian Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation and deepening pragmatic cooperation. Putin also called for giving full play to the role of the commercial chamber, continuously improve the trade mix, make long-term planning and expand investment cooperation. The president expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation between the Far East region of Russia and China's Northeastern region. He said Russia wishes to enhance cooperation with China in energy, electric power, civil aviation, telecommunications and environmental protection. Vice Premier Wu Yi attended the meeting.
