President Hu Jintao Meets with Kazakh Prime Minister Masimov

On August 18, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov in Astana.

Hu said recent years have witnessed enhanced economic and trade cooperation. He proposed both sides focus their joint efforts in the following four aspects. First, he urged the two sides to earnestly implement major cooperation projects to consolidate the foundation of bilateral ties, including the Khorgos international cross-border cooperation center. Second, he called for enhancing cooperation with Kazakhstan in non-resources fields, including machine-making, telecommunication, chemistry and infrastructure. Third, Hu suggested efforts be made to improve the investment environment and regulate the trade order in an effort to guarantee legal rights of enterprises and citizens of the two countries. Fourth, the president proposed enhancement of bilateral cooperation in the construction of crude oil and natural gas pipelines.

Masimov said the Kazakh side gives top priority to pragmatic cooperation with China in all areas. He said President Hu's proposals are of great significance, pledging that his government will work with China to earnestly implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, so as to strengthen cooperation on trade, investment, energy, and border ports and materialize the agreements inked by the two sides for mutual benefit and common development.

Vice Premier Wu Yi attended the meeting.
