On November 4, 2007, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met in Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan, with Turkmenistan's Majlis (Assembly) Speaker Akdzha Nurberdyeva.

During the meeting, Wen thanked the Turkmen government and people for their warm hospitality, saying that it fully represents the profound feelings the Turkmen people hold towards the Chinese people. He said Sino-Turkmen relations are developing steadily and cooperation in various fields has achieved remarkable accomplishments. Wen said that both sides are satisfied with the ongoing development of bilateral relations and are confident about their cooperation in the future. The two countries have agreed to attach greater importance to bilateral relations and broaden exchanges and cooperation in political, economic, humanity and other fields by improving mechanism and planning on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the Chinese premier added. Noting that legislative bodies play a vital role in promoting friendship between peoples, Wen expressed hope that the national legislatures of the two countries will further their cooperation in a bid to promote the long-term steady development of relations between the two countries.

On her part, Nurberdyeva said both Turkmenistan and China are committed to boosting economic development and improving people's welfare, and the sustained growth of bilateral ties and the ever-closer cooperation between the two countries will bring tremendous benefit to the two peoples. The Turkmen assembly actively supports friendly cooperation between the two countries, she said, adding that the Turkmen assembly hopes to strengthen its exchanges with China's National People's Congress and make greater contribution to the development of bilateral relations.

On the same day, Premier Wen Jiabao also laid a wreath at former Turkmen President Niyazov's mausoleum and visited an independent museum.
