Wen Jiabao Holds Seminar with Russian Parliamentarians

2007/11/07

On November 6, 2007, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held a seminar at the hotel where he stayed in Moscow with members of Russian Federation Council and State Duma. Wen and some 30 members of Russia's parliament exchanged views in a friendly and warm atmosphere on developing China-Russia friendly cooperation.

The partnership between China and Russia has made great headway since it was forged 10 years ago, Wen said. The two countries have conducted active cooperation in the fields of politics, economy and humanities, exchanged frequent high-level visits and strengthened mutual political trust, he said, adding that the successful reciprocal national years were warmly welcome by both peoples and have had broad influence. Facts prove that the China-Russia partnership of strategic coordination conforms to the fundamental interests of the two peoples, has withstood the tests of time and enjoys a broad prospect of development, Wen said. He said that whatever happens, China and Russia should carry out the concept of peace featuring "friendship for generations" and firmly promote their comprehensive partnership of strategic cooperation.

Russian lawmakers said Russia's political parties support the development of the partnership with China, adding that such a stance will be maintained no matter what changes take place in parliament. They said the Russian parliament hopes to strengthen exchanges with China's NPC to create favorable conditions and provide sound legal guarantee for bilateral cooperation.

The Russian side called on the two countries to enhance cooperation between Russia's far eastern and China's northeastern regions, jointly protect cross-border water resources, set up cultural centers and enhance exchanges in the area of humanities.

Having listened to the parliamentarians' remarks, the Chinese premier stressed that China-Russia friendship should be deeply rooted among the people so as to achieve further growth. He called for building mutual understanding and friendship between both peoples and carrying on the good-neighborly friendship for generations. Calling Russian lawmakers representatives of people, Wen hopes that the two countries' legislatures will strengthen exchanges and cooperation and jointly contribute to the development of bilateral ties.

Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi attended the seminar.

On the same day, Wen also called on the staff of the Chinese Embassy in Russia and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions, overseas Chinese and Chinese students.
