Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Attends the Foreign Ministers' Meeting of China, Russia and India

On May 15, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee attended the Foreign Ministers' Meeting of China, Russia and India in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The three ministers reached broad consensus on strengthening communication and coordination on regional and international affairs and deepening pragmatic cooperation between the three countries.

Yang spoke positively of the progress in trilateral cooperation since the Harbin Meeting. He pointed out that the trilateral cooperation is witnessing an accelerating momentum with areas of cooperation being expanded and contents of cooperation being enriched. The three parties have established necessary cooperation mechanism and strengthened dialogue and coordination on regional and international issues. The three parties have launched or will soon launch the cooperation in such areas as agriculture, medicine and health, disaster mitigation and relief. The three parties have established institutionalized exchange and communications channels for business communities. The three parties enjoy bring prospects for cooperation. The strengthened cooperation between the three countries conforms to the development trend of international situation and will embrace further development opportunities. China attaches importance to the trilateral cooperation between China, Russia and India and will put the trilateral cooperation in an important place in China's foreign policy. China will work together with Russia and India to push the trilateral cooperation for new progress.

The three parties noted that China, Russia, and India, as countries having a long history and witnessing fast growth, look forward to strengthening trilateral cooperation and seeking common development, and are committed to safeguarding regional and global peace, stability and security.

The three parties agreed to be committed to building a multi-polar, stable and harmonious world, promoting the democratization of international relations and building up a more just and rational international order. The three parties agreed to be committed to strengthening dialogue and coordination on a wide range of issues including the reform of the United Nations, climate change, grain security, counter-terrorism, drugs trafficking, transnational crimes, the Afghanistan issue, the Iranian nuclear issue, the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and the Middle East issue.

The three parties agreed to strengthen cooperation in such areas as agriculture, disaster mitigation and relief, health and medicine, strengthen the links between business communities, increase the exchange and dialogue between the academia and deepen cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Russia and India reaffirmed their support for the Beijing Olympic Games and their commitment to ensure its successful holding. The two countries expressed their condolence over the devastating earthquake disaster in China and reaffirmed their willingness to provide support. China and Russia also expressed their condolence to victims of the terrorist attack in India and reaffirmed their opposition to terrorisms in all its forms and manifestations.

After the meeting, the foreign ministers issued a Joint Communique of the Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of India and met with the press together.
