Hu Jintao Meets with the Speakers of Both Houses of the Tajik Parliament

On August 27, 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao met at the parliament building in Tajikistan with Makhmadsaid Ubaidulloyev, speaker of the Upper House of Tajikistan's Supreme Assembly, and Sadullo Khairulloyev, speaker of the Lower House of Tajikistan's Supreme Assembly. President Hu said the two countries are neighbors sharing common mountains and rivers and the two peoples enjoy the profound traditional friendship. He hailed the smooth development of relations since the two countries established diplomatic ties 16 years ago. "Developing good-neighborly and friendly cooperative relations conforms to the common interests of the two states and peoples, and is in the interests of regional peace, stability and prosperity," Hu said. China attaches importance to its relations with Tajikistan and will enhance cooperation in such fields as politics, economy, security and culture so as to push for in-depth development of bilateral ties, the Chinese leader noted. The legislatures of the two countries have maintained sound cooperation over the years. The two sides are currently dedicated to promoting economic growth and legal system building. It is necessary for China to strengthen legislative cooperation with Tajikistan at all levels and through diverse channels, said Hu. "We support the two legislatures to build mutual understanding, exchange experience and learn from each other in such fields as establishing economic laws, supervision over the executive branch and legislation for boosting economic progress and external relations so as to actively push forward bilateral practical cooperation between both sides in all areas," Hu said. Upper House Speaker Makhmadsaid Ubaidulloyev said the Tajik people have friendly feelings towards Chinese people and admire China's unique traditional culture and enormous achievements in national development. He said many Chinese companies and investments had contributed to his country's economic and social development. He spoke highly of Tajik-Chinese cooperation under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), adding that to further good-neighborly and friendly cooperation with China is an important part of the Tajik foreign policy. The Tajik side hopes to work with China to deepen strategic cooperation and consolidate good-neighborly friendship to push forward bilateral ties. The Tajik parliament is ready to make positive efforts to this end. Ling Jihua, Wang Huning and Dai Bingguo attended the meeting.
