Yang Jiechi Holds Talks with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov

On April 27, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov in Moscow. Both sides had an in-depth exchange of views on joint efforts to advance China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation as well as major international and regional issues, and reached broad consensus.

Yang said this year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries and their strategic partnership of cooperation is at a new starting point and facing an important opportunity for development. Meanwhile, as the complex and volatile international situation and spreading global financial crisis also pose severe challenges to the two countries, enhancing bilateral ties has become more important and pressing, he added. During their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 London Summit, the two heads of state made planning for the development of bilateral ties in the next phase. China is ready to work with Russia to comprehensively implement the major consensus reached by the two heads of state, seize the opportunity and join hands to cope with various challenges and threats. Yang urged both sides to continue to strengthen mutual support and strategic coordination, actively deepen pragmatic cooperation in all areas, enhance communication and coordination in international and regional issues and push China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation to a new level.

Lavrov made positive comments on bilateral ties, saying that Russia attaches great importance to conducting friendly cooperation with China in all areas and is committed to furthering their strategic partnership of cooperation. Amid the ongoing global financial and economic crisis, Russia is ready to intensify cooperation with China and strive to overcome the difficulties and challenges brought bout by the crisis. He hoped that both sides will further increase high-level visits, build strategic trust and expand pragmatic cooperation in the economic and trade sector. He also called on both sides to take the opportunities of the Year of Russian Language in China and the Year of Chinese Language in Russia to expand humanities exchanges and cooperation, offer mutual support on major issues concerning the other's core interests and ensure the success of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Russia-China diplomatic relations.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on such issues as the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
