Hu Jintao Meets with U.S. House Speaker Pelosi

2009/05/27

On the afternoon of May 27, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her delegation at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu said despite hardships, bilateral relations have achieved remarkable progress since the two nations forged diplomatic relations 30 years ago, thanks to the efforts of the two governments and people of vision from all walks of life. Hu noted that the two had "worked closer" on many fields in the new century and maintained close consultation and coordination on some major international and regional issues. He recalled his meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in London last month, saying the two had agreed to promote a "positive," "cooperative" and "comprehensive" relationship in the 21st century, setting the tone for development of bilateral ties in the new period.

Hu said China was willing to work with the United States to build up mutual trust, expand consensus and properly handle their differences through dialogue and consultations based on equality and mutual respect. Both sides should make unremitting efforts to forge a positive, cooperative and comprehensive bilateral relationship in the 21st century, Hu said. He also voiced support for further exchange and cooperation between the two legislatures.

Pelosi thanked Hu for meeting with her. She said U.S.-China ties were of great significance, expressing the hope that her visit would help promote mutual understanding and step up policy dialogue and pragmatic cooperation in fields such as energy, the environment and climate change in a bid to create a good environment for future generations. The U.S. lawmakers expressed congratulation and admiration for China's rapid development.

Both sides also exchanged views on energy security, climate change and other issues.

Li Jianguo, Vice-Chairman and Secretary-General of NPC Standing Committee, and other officials attended the meeting.
