Dai Bingguo Attends the Meeting of Security Representatives of the BRIC Countries

Senior representatives on security issues from the BRIC countries met in Moscow on May 29, 2009. Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo attended the meeting.

Dai pointed out that the world today is undergoing tremendous changes and adjustments and the international financial crisis has had an unprecedented all-round and far-reaching impact on the international political, economic, security and social situations. He said the upheaval has brought about a new round of complex adjustments in the world pattern, international relations and the world order. All nations, Dai said, desire to reform the current international economic and financial system, expand international cooperation based on common interest, safeguard world peace and stability, promote global economic growth and jointly deal with global issues. The state councilor suggested that in the face of mounting common threats and challenges, developed and emerging economies should seriously consider ways of promoting international order and mechanism conducive to common interests, pushing for dialogues and cooperation favorable for sustainable development, and working together to build a harmonious world of long lasting peace and common prosperity.

Dai pointed out that the rise of emerging economies is one of the major development trends of the world today. The BRIC countries, Dai said, should work together to enlarge their consensus and common interest, exchange in-depth views on major international and regional issues of common concern, as well as global issues, strengthen coordination and cooperation, and facilitate the settlement of problems. In particular, Dai said, the countries should reinforce their cooperation in dealing with the economic downturn, enhance coordination on macro-economic policies, jointly oppose protectionism in any form, speed up the reform of the international financial system, and advance the creation of an international cooperation mechanism conforming to globalization and multipolarization.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Dai Bingguo met with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, Minister of Strategic Affairs of Brazil Roberto Mangabeira Unger and Indian National Security Advisor R. K. Narayanan.

At the meeting, all the parties exchanged in-depth views and reached broad consensus on global and strategic issues including enhanced cooperation in dealing with the financial crisis.
