Jia Qinglin Meets with Burundian President and President of Cote d'Ivoire's Economic and Social Council

On November 6, 2006, Chairman Jia Qinglin of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) met respectively with Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza and President of Cote d'Ivoire's Economic and Social Council Laurent Dona Fologo at the Great Hall of the People.

They made positive comments on the important achievements made during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, agreeing that the declaration and action plan adopted at the summit blueprint and define the direction for closer China-Africa cooperation for common development. China and African countries will make concerted efforts to earnestly implement the achievements of the summit and deepen a new type of China-Africa strategic partnership for the benefit of both peoples, they said.

When meeting with Nkurunziza, Jia said Burundi is a trustworthy and sincere friend of China in Africa and the traditional friendly cooperative ties between China and Burundi are showing new vitality in the new era.  He also expressed China's appreciation for Burundi for its firm adherence to the one-China policy. Jia said China would continue to support Burundi's efforts in seeking national reconciliation and promoting peace process.   "China is also ready to further cooperation with Burundi in the areas of education, health and personnel training so as to push bilateral ties to a higher level," said Jia. Jia briefed on China's multi-party cooperation and political consultative system under the CPC's leadership, saying the CPPCC is ready to strengthen ties with Burundi's parliament and people from all walks of life to contribute to bilateral ties and the friendship between the two peoples.

Nkurunziza said the two peoples share a fraternal friendship. He thanked China for its long-term support and help, saying that China's assistance with Burundi's agricultural, health and infrastructure projects has had important impact on the improvement of Burundi people's life.  Nkurunziza said Burundi is satisfied with the smooth development of bilateral ties and is willing to promote in-depth development of bilateral cooperation.  He also reiterated that Burundi is firmly committed to the one-China policy.

"The peoples of the two countries enjoy deep traditional friendship. Our relations are time-tested and have endured the vicissitude of international situations," Jia said.  He noted China appreciates Cote d'Ivoire's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support of China's reunification.  China firmly supports Cote d'Ivoire's peace process and is ready to expand economic and trade cooperation with Cote d'Ivoire based on the principle of mutual benefit to further push forward bilateral friendly cooperation, Jia said. The CPPCC is ready to strengthen exchanges with Cote d'Ivoire's parliament, Economic and Social Council and other agencies to enrich bilateral cooperation, Jia added.

Fologo conveyed the greetings from President Laurent Gbagbo to Hu Jintao. He said China has always supported African people's efforts in maintaining national sovereignty and boosting economic development, and the cooperation between China and Africa has become an important part of South-South cooperation. Fologo said Cote d'Ivoire is ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China in all areas and welcomes more Chinese enterprises to invest in Cote d'Ivoire and participate in his country's economic construction.

On the same day, Jia also met with Chad's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and International Cooperation Ahmad Allam-Mi and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and French Affairs Come Zoumara of the Central Africa Republic.
