China and Cape Verde
In 2010, the friendly and cooperative relationship between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Cape Verde continued to grow steadily.
The two countries had close high-level exchanges. In April, President Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires and Prime Minister José Maria Pereira Neves sent letters of condolences to President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao respectively on devastating earthquake in Yushu, Qinghai Province. From 6 to 8 October, President Pires and his wife attended the National Pavilion Day of Cape Verde at the Shanghai Expo. From 12 to 14 November, Minister of State and Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Telecommunication Manuel Inocencio Sousa attended the opening ceremony of the Third Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries in Macao. From 11 to 14 July, Foreign Minister José Brito attended the first session of the China-Cape Verde Joint Committee of the Economic, Commercial and Technical Cooperation in China. During the session, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Foreign Minister José Brito and the two sides signed the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation Between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Cape Verde. On 23 September, Foreign Minister José Brito attended the Second Political Consultation between Foreign Ministers of China and African Countries in New York.
The countries conducted smooth cooperation in economic and trade fields. Measures concerning Cape Verde announced at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation were all implemented. In October, the ground-breaking ceremony for the National Stadium of Cape Verde with Chinese assistance was held. The maternity ward, check-up center and nursing station projects at Agostinho Neto Hospital were completed and handed over to the Cape Verde side.
Bilateral cooperation in other fields kept strengthening. In February, Secretary-General of African Party for Independence of Cape Verde Armindo Mauricio visited China. Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Wang Gang met with him. In October, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture Fernanda Marques visited China and attended the closing ceremony of the Shanghai Expo. In December, Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Defense Ministry Major General Jia Xiaoning visited Cape Verde.
