Yang Jiechi Meets with DRC President, Sierra Leonean, Egyptian Foreign Ministers, and EU Foreign Policy Chief

On the morning of September 21, local time, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Joseph Kabila, Sierra Leonean Foreign Minister J. B. Dauda, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and the EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Catherine Ashton, respectively at the UN headquarters in New York.

During his meeting with Kabila, Yang said that DRC is a traditional friendly cooperative partner of China. Recent years have witnessed political trust, frequent exchanges at all levels and expanded cooperation between China and DRC with a sound growth momentum of bilateral ties. China is willing to continue to enhance bilateral relations on the existing basis, conduct more cooperation within the framework of China-Africa Cooperation Forum, support DRC's choice of development path suited to its national conditions and provide support for DRC within China's capacity, Yang said. Kabila thanked for China's firm support to his country, saying that bilateral relations have been consolidated continuously with frequent high-level visits and wide ranging cooperation areas. DRC is ready to further strengthen cooperation with China in areas such as agriculture and industry as well as increase communication in African regional affairs.

When meeting with Dauda, Yang said that Sierra Leone is China's good brother and good partner. The relations between the two countries have entered a new phase of comprehensive and rapid development with expanding areas and more fruitful results of cooperation. The Chinese government has decided to provide new non-reimbursable assistance in support of Sierra Leonean economic and social development. China is confident with the prospect of the bilateral relations and is willing to expand friendly exchanges and practical cooperation between the two countries, as well as strengthen coordination in international affairs so as to push bilateral comprehensive cooperation to bring more benefit to both peoples, Yang said. Dauda said that the cooperation between China and Sierra Leone, as old friends, is comprehensive, fruitful and satisfactory. Assistance provided by China and infrastructure, hospitals and other projects built by the Chinese side played an important role in economic and social development of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone looked forward to lifting the bilateral ties to a new level.

During his meeting with Amr, Yang appreciated Egyptian efforts to restore social order and economic growth. China hoped Egypt would achieve smooth transition of power as well as stable development and continue to play an important role in regional and international affairs. China attached great importance to building strategic cooperative partnership with Egypt and would like to take the opportunity of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties to further consolidate and deepen political mutual trust between the two countries, tap potential in economic and trade cooperation, step up coordination in major regional and international affairs and deepen bilateral cooperation within the framework of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Amr said that the relationship with China is one of the most important bilateral relations of his country. Egypt-China relations have a long history and the friendship between both sides has been deeply rooted in the hearts of both peoples. After the recent transformation occurred in Egypt, it is vital for the country to enhance economic ties with China particularly in the areas of tourism and investment where there is huge potential. Egypt hopes to continue to strengthen sound cooperation with China on international affairs and is ready to carry out tripartite cooperation with China in Africa. The two also exchanged views on Libyan, Syrian and Israeli-Palestinian issues.

When meeting with Ashton, Yang said that China attaches great importance to developing China-EU relations. Currently the European sovereign debt crisis has made some progress. China believed that the EU has the ability and wisdom to overcome the difficulty. The two sides should further expand bilateral trade, deepen practical cooperation, enhance strategic mutual trust and properly handle problems in China-EU relations. The two sides should well prepare for the 14th China-EU Summit in order to achieve more substantial results. Ashton said that in face of the sovereign debt crisis, the EU hoped to further boost trade relations with China, increase mutual political trust and properly handle concerns of and differences between both sides The EU is willing to take the opportunity of the China-EU summit to strengthen communication with China and send out a message of deepening EU-China relations. The two sides also exchanged views on the G20 Cannes Summit, Israeli-Palestinian issue, Iranian nuclear and Libyan issues.
