Bilateral Relations

In 2010, the friendly and cooperative relationship between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Congo continued to develop smoothly.

The two countries had close high-level exchanges. In June, President Hu Jintao sent condolences to President Denis Sassou-Nguesso on the train derailment in the country. In April, President Sassou-Nguesso sent a letter of condolences to President Hu on the earthquake disaster in Yushu, Qinghai Province and offered to donate a primary school in the disaster area. From 29 April to 3 May, President Sassou-Nguesso came to China to attend the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Expo. President Hu met with him. In June and August, President Sassou-Nguesso sent letters of condolences to President Hu on the devastating rain storms in Southern China and the massive mudslide in Zhouqu, Gansu Province. In August, Special Envoy of President Hu and Minister of Education Yuan Guiren attended the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Congo. He met with President Sassou-Nguesso and held talks with Minister of Higher Education Ange Antoine Abena. In November, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Daniel Owassa came to China for consultation between the two foreign ministries.

Economic cooperation and trade achieved fruitful results. In April, Vice Commerce Minister Fu Ziying led an economic and trade delegation of the Chinese government to the Republic of Congo. He met with President Sassou-Nguesso and held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Basile Ikouébé. In June, the biggest project China undertakes in the Republic of Congo Imboulou hydro power station was completed and started a trial run.

Cooperation in the military, cultural and educational fields was dynamic. In April, Minister at the Presidency in charge of National Defense Charles Zacharie Bowao led a delegation to China. In May, the Kungfu Monk Corps of Henan Shaolin Temple staged performances in the Republic of Congo. In June, Minister of Culture and Arts Jean-Claude Gakosso led a delegation to China. In the same month, Minister of Commerce and Procurement Claudine Munari attended the National Pavilion Day of the Republic of Congo at the Shanghai Expo.
