Hu Jintao Holds Talks with Kenyan President Kibaki

On the morning of May 1, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks in Shanghai with visiting Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, who is here for a state visit and the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo. Hu said the friendship between the two countries enjoys a long history and their friendly cooperation has experienced smooth development since the establishment of diplomatic ties. In recent years, there have been frequent exchanges of high-level visits and further strengthening of political trust between the two sides. Economic and trade cooperation is full of vigor and vitality and the outcome of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) as well as cooperation projects agreed upon by both sides have been implemented in an all-round manner with fruitful exchanges and cooperation in the field of humanities. Hailing Kenya as an important cooperative partner of China in Africa, Hu emphasized that China cherishes the traditional friendship with Kenya and is willing to make joint efforts to deepen friendly cooperation in various fields. First, Hu said the two countries should build up political trust. Both sides should continue to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen friendly exchanges between legislative bodies, parties and government departments and deepen cooperation in international affairs to safeguard the common interests of the developing nations. Second, Hu suggested both sides deepen trade and economic cooperation by ensuring that all ongoing cooperation projects within the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation should be fulfilled smoothly, and exploring new ways of cooperation and expanding cooperation in infrastructure, energy and tourism. China is ready to offer support within its capability to Kenya’s economic construction and expand bilateral trade. Third, both sides should enhance people-to-people and cultural cooperation by implementing plans and agreements on cultural and educational cooperation. China is willing to train personnel for the country, Hu said. Hailing the sound relations between the two countries, Kibaki said he appreciated China's selfless assistance to his country. Kenya attaches great importance to the long-standing and close relations with China and is ready to work with China to further expand their trade ties and deepen cooperation in the field of infrastructure construction, he said. Kibaki also reaffirmed his country’s adherence to the one-China policy. Prior to the talks, Hu held a welcoming ceremony for Kibaki at the Shanghai International Convention Center. Yu Zhengsheng, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Ling Jihua, member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, Wang Huning, member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee, State Councilor Dai Bingguo and other officials attended the related activities.
