Chinese President Hu Jintao Meets with President of the Senegalese National Assembly Seck

2009/02/14

On February 14, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in Dakar with President of the Senegalese National Assembly Mamadou Seck.

During the meeting, Hu said the Chinese people have always held friendly feelings toward the Senegalese people. In recent years China-Senegal relations, guided by the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, have developed rapidly with frequent exchanges of high-level visits, enhanced political mutual trust and closer cooperation in economy and trade, Hu said. In international affairs, both sides have also cooperated closely to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the two countries and other developing nations. China is satisfied with the sound momentum of the development of bilateral ties, said Hu, adding China cherishes friendship and cooperation with Senegal and is ready to work with the country to increase mutual understanding and trust and enhance mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas in a bid to push bilateral ties to a new high.

Exchanges between parliaments of the two countries constitute an important part of bilateral ties and serve to promote the further growth of these ties, said the Chinese president. Since the resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries, the two parliaments have rapidly resumed their friendly exchanges and cooperation and established the friendship groups respectively, playing a positive role in pushing forward bilateral ties. The National People’s Congress (NPC) of China is ready to expand exchanges and cooperation with the Senegalese parliament, especially to strengthen contacts between special committees and engage in exchanges on democratic and legal construction and economic legislation so as to build up mutual understanding and promote in-depth development of bilateral ties.

On China-Africa ties, Hu said the Beijing Summit of China-Africa Cooperation Forum ushered in a new era for cooperation between the two sides. He attributed the strong vitality of China-Africa cooperation to sincerity, friendliness and equality of both sides, noting that China has never imposed its views on Africa, nor set any political conditions for its aid to Africa. He said another factor for their successful cooperation is that both sides have adhered to the principle of reciprocity and joint development. Neither side will seek its own interest at the cost of the other, he said. China is willing to make joint efforts with African countries including Senegal to create a brighter future for China-Africa ties, said Hu.

Seck thanked for President Hu’s choice of Senegal as an important stop of his Africa tour, saying that the visit indicates once again China’s concern for Africa and its people. He said China's aid to Africa's economic and social development embodies again the spirit of South-South cooperation. The Beijing Summit of China-Africa Cooperation Forum was successful and China has earnestly honored its commitments, he said. The Senegal-China cooperation can serve as a good example, he noted. The Senegalese parliament attaches great importance to ties with China and appreciates the rapid growth of bilateral ties. The Senegalese parliament looks forward to promoting communication and exchange with the National People's Congress of China.

Ling Jihua, Wang Huning and Dai Bingguo attended the meeting.
