China and Senegal

In 2010, the friendly relationship between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Senegal enjoyed healthy and steady growth. Cooperation in various fields progressed smoothly.

The two sides had dynamic exchanges at various levels. In April, Special Envoy of the Chinese government and Vice Minister of Education Hao Ping attended the celebration activities in Senegal marking the 50th anniversary of the independence of the country. In the same month, Vice Minister of the Information Office of the State Council Wang Guoqing visited Senegal. Minister of Trade Amadou Niang came to China to attend the opening ceremony of Expo Shanghai 2010 and the National Pavilion Day of Senegal as representative of the government of Senegal in April and July respectively. In 2010, China received a number of visitors from Senegal, including Minister of Health and Prevention Modou Diagne Fada, Minister of Communication and Spokesman of the government of Senegal Moustapha Guirassy and Chief of Defense of the Senegalese Armed Forces General Abdoulaye Fall. On 23 September, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Madické Niang attended the Second Political Consultation between Foreign Ministers of China and African Countries in New York.

Steady progress was made in economic cooperation and trade between China and Senegal. In April, the first session of China-Senegal Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade was successfully held in Beijing. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Madické Niang and Minister of State for International Cooperation, Regional Development, Air Transport and Infrastructure Karim Wade led a joint delegation to the session. During the session, the two sides signed the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation Between China and Senegal, and signed and exchanged notes on the provision of anti-malaria drugs by China to Senegal. Positive progress was made in the mutually beneficial cooperation between companies from the two sides in infrastructure, fishery and telecommunication. The Dakar public bus upgrading project jointly undertaken by Xiamen King Long Motor Group and the Senegalese side made smooth progress. The first batch of 150 locally assembled passenger vehicles were handed over to the Senegalese side.

The political parties from the two countries had close contacts. In January, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee Wang Jiarui paid a visit to Senegal. During the visit, he held talks with the leader of the Democratic Party of Senegal (PDS). The two sides reached extensive consensus on further strengthening inter-party exchanges and cooperation to consolidate the political foundation of the bilateral relations. In August, Member of the Steering Committee of PDS and Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Abdou Fall attended the China-Africa Agricultural Forum jointly sponsored by the International Department of CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of Agriculture of China. In November, Member of the Steering Committee of PDS and Speaker of the National Assembly Mamadou Seck led a cadre delegation of the PDS to China.
