Vice-Premier Qian Qichen Met with Ugandan Parliament Speaker

On October 14, 2002, Vice-Premier Qian Qichen met with Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern. Qian warmly welcomed Ssekandi's delegation to China. He said that Uganda is one of the first African countries to establish diplomatic relations with China. Sino-Ugandan relations have witnessed steady growth in the four decades since the two countries forged diplomatic ties. The two countries have carried out fruitful cooperation in many fields, with which the Chinese side is satisfied. Qian expressed his gratitude to Uganda for its long-term adherence to the One China policy and for its precious support to China on human rights and other issues. He said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Uganda, and is willing to further consolidate and develop such friendly cooperation. Ssekandi said that China has always been Uganda's close and friendly friend since Uganda's independence, and has provided Uganda with a great amount of generous aid. The Ugandan government and people are deeply grateful and would like to further the unity and cooperation with China. He reiterated that Uganda would continue to stick to the One China policy.
