On March 29, 2006, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Nigerian Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Bello Masari in the Great Hall of the People.

Wu said that both peoples share a profound traditional friendship. In particular in the recent couple of years, bilateral relations, especially economic and trade cooperation, have made new progress and last year the heads of state of the two countries reached consensus on establishing bilateral strategic partnership, upgrading bilateral relations to a new level. Wu thanked Nigeria for its adherence to the one-China policy, as well as its precious support for China on human rights and other questions.

Wu said that China is sincerely delighted with the achievements in Africa's economic and social development. China's African Policy issued by the Chinese government early this year announces the objectives and measures of China's policy towards Africa in a comprehensive and systematic manner. China would like to work with African countries including Nigeria to jointly build up a new type of strategic partnership featuring equality, mutual trust, win-win cooperation and mutual exchanges.

Wu made positive comments on friendly exchanges between the NPC of China and the Nigerian parliament and hoped that both sides will maintain high-level exchanges, expand contact between their special committees and members of parliament, deepen cooperation in the areas of legislation and supervision and strengthen communication and cooperation in the international organization of Parliaments so as to inject content and vitality into all-round development of bilateral relations.

Masari reaffirmed that Nigeria will resolutely pursue the one-China policy and indicated that the Nigerian parliament would like to further enhance relations with the NPC of China and make positive contributions to building up the friendship between both peoples, promoting mutually beneficial cooperation and pushing for development of bilateral relations.
